Cali galleries: In-N-Out.

These next 2 posts happened in the same day–my last tourist day in San Diego. If you want to check out the rest of this series, go ahead and click here. I spent two weeks in California meeting with family and friends, and being a tourist. This series documents this trip. Go ahead and check it out! ๐Ÿ˜„

This day’s adventure started with lunch at no other place than In-N-Out. I’ve heard so many things about this place, and have been told that it’s something that must be tried when in California. I was really excited to finally be trying such a popular thing. I nearly jumped out of the car when we parked. BURGEEEER YAAAAAASS.ย ๐Ÿ˜†

In all the time that I’ve seen and heard people talk about In-N-Out, I heard hype around pretty much the same thing–Animal Style. It’s an item on their not-so-secret secret menu, and means the addition of grilled onions, cheese, and extra sauce. Given its popularity, it was clear what my order was going to be–a double double and fries, both Animal Style.ย ๐Ÿ˜IMG_4895

Look at that beaut. It took a lot of restraint to not chow down as soon as the food arrived, but Iย had to take a photo first–if not for the blog, then for my own memory bank. I took this and another one and then,ย finally, FINALLY,ย ate my lunch.ย ๐Ÿคค

The burger was really good and I’d definitely have it again, but it wasn’t as amazing to me as the hype made it out to be. Maybe it was just the fact that I heard too much hype about it, or maybe I just eat too many burgers. Again though, it was super good and filling, and I’ll definitely be going back when I can.ย ๐Ÿ˜

So yeah, just a short post to start off the last tourist day. I’ve gotta say, it was a great start–stomach, heart, and soul full (burgers really make me happyย ๐Ÿ˜†). What followed is a very tiring and fun day–but that’s for the next post. Thanks for sticking with me!ย ๐Ÿ˜„

โ€™til next time,

Music monday: START:DASH!!

So I spent the last week re-watching one of the most happy-go-lucky anime titles I’ve ever watched–Love Live!ย ๐Ÿ˜† It’s a very entertaining show, and since it deals with being school idols (pop groups from certain high schools), there are a lot of super catchy songs. This one is the first one performed in the show, and is the one that’s been pretty much stuck in my head since I heard it again. If you read the lyrics you’ll find that its very uplifting, and with its melody, you have a tune that you can’t help but dance to, or at least bob your head. Check it out!ย ๐ŸŽถ

P.S. – I couldn’t find the music video of START:DASH!!, but I did find this live performance of the voice actors of the characters. I was so amazed when I found this that I binge watched several more live performances by them.ย ๐Ÿ˜†

New books from #MIBF2017.

September 13 – 17 was this year’s Manila International Book Fair at the SMX Convention Center. It’s the biggest book event in the country, and I’ve never been able to check it out because of how far it is to where I live. This year though, I managed to finally go with two of my friends, and we got overwhelmed by everything together.ย ๐Ÿ˜ต

There were so many people in line and inside the venue, which I didn’t quite expect because it was the second to the last day when we went. At the same time, because it was its penultimate day, I was worried that we weren’t going to be able to get out hands on good books. Thankfully, there were still loads of stocks available.ย ๐Ÿ˜

After looking through a lot of titles, a lot of which ended up in the cart, the final selection ended up to be these five books. As much as I wanted to take home ALL the books, I thought it would be a better idea to be reasonable and picky so as to ensure that they’d all be read. I don’t have much time to read these days, and I still have a bunch of books on my Kindle that I’ve yet to read, I didn’t want to add too many titles.ย ๐Ÿ˜•

The five books I picked are the following: The Art of War by Sun Tzu, Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, and Dirty Pretty Things by Michael Faudet.ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

The first three books listed are ones that I’ve been wanting to read for quite a while now, and I’ll Give You the Sun was a book that fascinated me when I read about it a few months back. The last one listed is a poetry book that I barely read about prior to picking it up, and after reading some reviews, I’m a bit worried about the purchase. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt though.ย ๐Ÿ˜…

These are (mostly) welcome additions to my small-as-of-the-moment library, and I look forward to exploring the contents of the books I’ve recently acquired. It was a very memorable and fun, albeit tiring day, and I hope that I get to go this convention again in the coming years.ย ๐Ÿ˜

โ€™til next time,

Music monday: Saturday night’s alright (for fighting).

We’re throwing back again today, although not entirely? This song is a really catchy and upbeat track released by Elton John in the 1970s. The reason this post isn’t completely a throwback is that this has come to surface through Kingsman: The Golden Circle. In my last postย I talked about how I watched this film over the weekend, and this track has been playing over and over in my head since. Not complaining though, it’s an awesome song. Check it out!ย ๐Ÿ˜†๐ŸŽถ

Kingsman 2. . . much?

Back in 2015, I was asked by a friend to watch this movie called Kingsman: The Secret Service. I had not seen any trailers for it and I don’t think I saw many posters for it either (or I didn’t pay much attention). I didn’t peg this movie to be something that I was going to like, I’m not a big fan of spy flicks, but I watched it with my friend anyway because why not? It ended up blowing my mind and easily becoming one of my favorite movies.ย ๐Ÿ˜

When I found out that a sequel was coming out, I was in disbelief, but when I saw the first few trailers, I was on the fence about whether or not I was fascinated by the premise. At some point, I stopped watching the trailers because I didn’t want to be spoiled about anything at all. I was going to watch it regardless of what I saw in the previews, so I wanted to preserve all surprises.ย ๐Ÿ˜†

This week the wait was finally over. On Wednesday, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released, and I watched it on its first weekend. My jaws dropped way too many times when I watched this movie, and there were a lot of moments when I yelled profanities in my head, in utter shock of the scenes. ๐Ÿ˜ต

The plot line seemed to me to be a bit of a parallel to the first movie, albeit is a lot more theatrical. Remember the church scene from Kingsman: The Secret Service? Well, there are a lot of those this time around (I stopped counting after a while haha). I’m not a movie critic or reviewer or anything and am stating only my opinions–I really liked this movie.ย ๐Ÿ˜

Reviews said that this movie was a bit too much, and I agree. There are multiple story lines at the same time, a lot of WTF moments and deaths, and many fight sequences, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad movie. At least for me, it being over the top made it more entertaining. If you haven’t watched it yet and are thinking about checking it out, I say go for it! It’s not as good as the film it follows, but it’s not a bad sequel, and definitely isn’t too bad compared to other things that have been released this year.ย ๐Ÿ˜†

โ€™til next time,

Surf and Sea: Elyu Day 1.

It’s been a while since I went on a road trip (Tagaytay doesn’t really count because it’s only about 2 to 2 and a half hours away), so when I knew that a long weekend was coming up, I decided it would be a good time to go somewhere and take a break. It’s also been quite some time since I’ve gone to the beach, so that’s where I decided to go.ย ๐Ÿ˜

We left at around 8:30 AM in order to arrive in time for check in atย Costa Villa Beach Resortย at 2:00 PM. Holy shiitake, that was an insanely long drive. Granted, I wasn’t driving, but I was already incredibly tired so I could only imagine how much more tried the driver was. It was about 3 and a half hours on the road, going through three different expressways.ย ๐Ÿ˜ต

One thing we forgot to do before leaving Manila was getting cash for the trip. So there was a point that we were getting quite frantic when we reached the La Union area because there were barely any banks. We ended up having to go on another hour driving in search of a bank after checking in just so we had funds. So that was crazy.ย ๐Ÿ˜…

The place we stayed at was simple and of a really good value. What could possibly be my favorite part about Costa Villa is the fact that it isn’t located right in the center of surf town. It’s located a little past it which gives them a separate strip of beach that isn’t as crowded and gives a bit more of a private feel. And if you wanted to check out the bars and food places in surf town, it’s just a few minutes walk away.ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

When we got back, we didn’t waste any more time. We changed into our swim clothes and headed down to the beach to check it out–but couldn’t resist jumping into the water and playing in the waves. We were there for about an hour, and then we rinsed off and relaxed a bit before going out for dinner.ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

We walked down the beach to get to our dinner destination. It was nice, walking by the waves as the sun started to set. In ten minutes, we arrived at Mad Monkeys, and tried their burgers with beer cheese sauce. I’ve got to say, the patties were perfectly cooked, and the cheese sauce just added to the rich flavor of the sandwich. It goes really well with the beverages we got them with (beer and orange soda), and was a really taste bud satisfying meal. I love love love burgers, and this has my two thumbs up.ย ๐Ÿ˜

After dinner, we started walking back to our room. This time we walked on the road–it was a bit too dark to walk by the sea. I knew we were going to pass by a well known coffee place called El Union on the way back, but I didn’t plan or expect to be dropping in that night. When we passed it by though, I was immediately pulled towards it.ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

The place itself emits such a chill vibe, and the people there–from the staff to the patrons, were just as chill. We approached the counter and stared at the menu for a bit. They’re popular for their brews–the owner is the reigning World Barista Champion (So flippin cool)–but they’re also known for a drink called Horchata that’s made with rice milk, cinnamon, and vanilla.ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

We were pretty full from dinner, so we decided not to get any particular food just then, but we decided to try the Dirty Horchata. This drink is their Horchata with a shot of espresso, and is a very interesting and delicious beverage. I, for one, am not a fan of cinnamon, but the espresso balances everything out and was just a delight. ๐Ÿ˜„

This drink pretty much ended our day. We went back to the resort, got some beers, and drank while munching on chips and watching a movie. It was a good day. Our short vacation has officially begun. ๐Ÿ˜

โ€™til next time,

Music monday: Too good at goodbyes.

Around 3 years after releasing his first album, Sam Smith is back with a new song and a new album to come soon. I’m not quite sure how to pin this track, to be honest. I think it’s a sad song, and it is, but at the same time it depicts strength? Although it seems to be a strength forged by pain–so I guess this adds to the sadness? Regardless, his voice is so unique and beautiful, and adds so much more emotion to his track. Check it out!ย ๐ŸŽถ
